Friendship Fields Academy at Friends University
We’re excited to offer three summer sessions of fun and learning for anyone 18 years or older with a cognitive disability. Instructors include local experts in each area. Sessions will take place:

  • June 5-7, 2017
  • June 8-10, 2017
  • June 12-14, 2017

Participants must apply and be accepted before they begin any session. For a detailed list of classes per session, see schedule.

Friendship Fields Academy Schedule

Check out the available classes for each of our three sessions in June. Participants may attend as many or as few sessions as they wish.

SESSION I (JUNE 5-7, 2017)

Morning Sessions

  1. Class: Greeting Card Crafts
    Instructor: Scarlett Tully, supervisor with Stampin’ Up
    Learn about scrapbooking styles and tools. Participants will make and take cards home.
  2. Class: The Arts
    Instructor: Dr. John Taylor, Friends University professor of music
    Explore and experience a variety art forms.

Afternoon Sessions

  1. Class: Microwave Cooking
    Instructor: Dixie Thomas, former USD 259 teacher
    Watch and participate in cooking yummy foods you can prepare in your home microwave! Supplies and equipment will be provided.
  2. Class: Makeup and Hair
    Instructor: Eric Fisher Academy
    Learn about face care and get your make-up and hair done.

SESSION II (June 8 -10, 2017)

Morning Session

  1. Class: Basketball Camp
    Instructor: RaeAnne Boothe and Dale Faber, Friends University basketball coaches
    Learn the ins and outs of basketball and practice your skills on the court.

Afternoon Sessions

  1. Class: Dance Class
    Instructor: Andrea Damm Dubois, dance instructor at A Step Ahead Dance Studio
    Learn a variety of dances that will get you moving.
  2. Class: Social Media
    Instructor: Christie Fallin, USD 259 English Teacher
    Explore opportunities to connect to others through social media.

SESSION III (June 12-14, 2017)

Morning Sessions

  1. Class: First Aid
    Instructor: Adam Koch, Friends University associate athletic trainer
    Learn life-saving techniques you can use in the event of an emergency.
  2. Class: Photography
    Instructor: Ashley Bass of Ashley Bass Photography
    Frame and shoot your way to great photos.
  3. Class: Botanica Gardener
    Instructor: Katie Shepherd, lead youth educator at Botanica
    Develop your green thumb with this session on gardening skills at Botanica.

Afternoon Sessions

  1. Class: Sign Language
    Instructors: Brandi Hoppock and Kelly Adams, USD 259 Interpreters
    Expand your communication skills by learning some basics of sign language.
  2. Class: Computer Skills
    Instructor: Tatyana Barnes, Friends University computer major
    Gain tips on how to use a computer.

About Friendship Fields

Friendship Fields is a program centered at Friends University that allows college-age adults with disabilities to experience college life while also offering Friends University students the opportunity to work with special needs students. The program was established by Friendship Fields Director Val Wall in conjunction with Bill Allan, associate professor of family life at Friends University, in 2014. Special needs students attend activities on the Friends campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays and follow a curriculum that focuses on life skills, people skills and social interaction with college students.
