Each year, students at Friends University nominate full-time faculty members for the W.A. Young Award for Excellence in Teaching and adjunct faculty members for the Jan LaFever Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award.
Dr. Karyn Turla was presented with the W.A. Young Award, and Philip Wood received the Jan LaFever award at the 2010 commencement ceremony.
The W.A. Young Award began in 1963 in honor of Dr. Walter A. Young, who served as a faculty member, academic dean and then as president of Friends University from 1939 to 1946.
In order to raise scholarship money during these difficult economic times, Davis-Moore Auto Group has declared May as Education Month. For every vehicle sold during the month, the group will donate $50 to university scholarship programs in Kansas. New car purchasers can choose which university the donation would benefit: Friends University, Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Newman University, Pittsburg State University or Wichita State University.
Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. John Yoder has announced that he plans to retire in two years as part of a carefully designed effort to provide planned succession in senior leadership at Friends University.

The following students were recognized at the 2010 Annual Awards Ceremony Tuesday, April 20, in Alumni Auditorium.
Friends University’s Campus and Career Transitions (CCT) Office and the Alumni Office will host a Backpack to Briefcase seminar that will educate students and graduates on the ins and outs of student loans from noon to 1 p.m. April 7 in the Casado Campus Center’s President’s Conference Room. Myra Pfannenstiel of the National Student Loan Program will present information on developing a budget and utilizing repayment options.
Additionally, the CCT Office is planning a Backpack to Briefcase seminar on health and life insurance for April 21.
Dr. Biff Green, who has served as president of Friends University since 1991, announced today his plans to retire in 2011. With full support from the Friends University Board of Trustees, Green has agreed to continue to lead the University for the 2010-2011 academic year, providing the board a year to conduct the search and transition to the next leader.
Approximately 250 high school students and teachers will attend the Psychology Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 12 in the Casado Campus Center. The fair is co-sponsored by the Psychology Department and Admissions Office and will include 25-30 interactive demonstrations as well as other activities. Lunch will be provided.
Friends University psychology majors and students taking psychology classes will assist in running the fair. A panel of top psychology alumni currently working in the field will be available for questions.
Friends University has received $1 million from the William L. Graham Charitable Trust to be applied to two existing scholarships the Graham family established with Friends University in the 1980s and 1990s.
