General Education Goal 6: Personal and Social Responsibility

Examining responsibility to self and society: Students will be able to develop and apply a combination of knowledge and skills to demonstrate an understanding of social responsibility and ethical behavior. Furthermore, students will be able to act on this understanding of social responsibility and ethical behavior to others in one’s local, national, or global community, and contribute positively via leadership, collaboration, or other direct action.

CBASE: 3 Credit Hours Required (PHIL 180, POLS 100, or POLS 250)
CAPS: 3 Credit Hours Required (PHIL 185 or POLS 110)

Learning Outcome 6-A (O6-A): Define and analyze a real‐world problem from an ethical perspective – Clearly defines a real‐world problem and provides a basic analysis from a well‐ delineated ethical perspective.

Learning Outcome 6-B (O6-B): Situate the problem in the context of other contemporary problems – Situates the problem in the context of other contemporary problems and shows their relevance in terms of comparative ethical significance and competition for resources.

Learning Outcome 6-C (O6-C): Situate the ethical perspective in the context of competing ethical perspectives – Compares and contrasts relevant competing ethical perspectives.

Learning Outcome 6-D (O6-D): Present and communicate the problem and ethical perspective – Communicates clearly an understanding of social responsibility and ethical behavior using appropriate content and relevant supporting materials.

Learning Outcome 6-E (O6-E): Describe how the project meaningfully serves a community (e.g., local, national, global) within an ethical framework- Describes how the project meaningfully serves short‐ term needs of the community and explores multiple unintended consequences using an ethical framework.

Learning Outcome 6-F (O6-F): Participate meaningfully in the project – Provides clear evidence of collaboration and communication and shows how this contributed to the goals of the project.

Learning Outcome 6-G (O6-G): Explore the project in the context of other efforts to meaningfully serve the community – Situate the project in the context of other efforts, past or present, to meaningfully serve the community.

Learning Outcome 6-H (O6-H): Present and communicate the project and ethical framework – Communicates clearly an understanding of the project and ethical framework using appropriate content and relevant supporting materials.

Learning Outcome 6-I (O6-I): Personal and Social Responsibility – Analyzes the ethical, social, and environmental consequences of global systems and identifies a range of actions informed by one’s sense of personal and civic responsibility.
