Friends University to Renovate Historic Delano Property for Art Department

Friends University President Dr. T.J. Arant today announced plans for expansion of the university’s footprint into the Delano Historic District.

“We are happy to announce a $3.5 million project that will include the renovation of a beautiful historic building on West Douglas,” Dr. Arant said.  “You can’t build a historic building, but you can save one.  Our hope is that we will be able to turn this beautiful building into a destination attracting our students and the community.”

Friends University to Honor 2012 Graduates

Friends University will honor nearly 900 graduates throughout Kansas in several ceremonies on April 29 and May 5. 

Graduates from the Lenexa Education Center will be honored at a ceremony at 11 a.m., April 29 at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel at the Convention Center’s Cottonwood Ballroom. 

Friends University’s Topeka Education Center will honor its graduates at a ceremony at 3:30 p.m., April 29 at the Capital Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in the Sunflower Ballroom.

Adjunct Faculty Member Earns Accounting Award

Kansas Celebrates Private College Week

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has declared the week of April 16-22 as Kansas Private College Week throughout the state. This proclamation urges “all citizens to join in this observance by recognizing the important contributions of private college in the state.”

Classes Canceled/University Services Unavailable Afternoon of March 30

As part of Dr. T.J. Arant’s presidential inauguration Friday, March 30, Friends University will cancel classes that day from 1 to 5 p.m. and some University services will be unavailable from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All University services will be unavailable from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

The Installation Ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. in Garvey Physical Education Center followed by a reception in Casado Campus Center.

Gown Town to offer free prom attire

The excitement of Prom can all too often bring with it the stress of finding funds to purchase expensive formal attire, putting this rite of passage out of reach for many area students.

Gown Town, which will be held from 2-8 p.m. Friday, March 14 in the Friends University Casado Campus Center, will alleviate this burden. All area high school students, girls and boys, are invited to select from donated gowns, suits and accessories that will be available free of charge. Seamstresses will also be present to provide free on-site alterations.

Annual Chili Cook-off Returns Feb. 16

As part of Cherry Carnival Week, Friends University welcomes students, staff, faculty, alumni and their families to attend the 14th annual Chili Cook-off from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Garvey P.E. Center Multipurpose Room. This free event has become popular in the campus community with more than 900 attendees last year. Participants can sample each booth’s chili and vote on best theme and best chili as well as snack on hot dogs, beverages and ice cream.

Friends University to Host History Day Feb. 24

Friends University will host the 2012 National History Day District 6 Competition on Feb. 24. Approximately 200 high-school and middle-school students, together with their teachers and parents, will participate in the competition. More than 30 professors, historians, specialists, and teachers serving as judges from other universities, museums, and schools in Wichita, in addition to Friends University professors and students, will participate in this event. This is the third year Friends University has hosted the event, and this year's theme is "Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History."

Davis Building’s Roof Project Earns Top Contractor Award

Hard work, patience and attention to detail have once again proved to be a winning combination. 

It took more than a year of hard work from the people of Buckley Roofing and patience on the part of the Friends University community, until the roofing project on the Davis Administration Building was completed. But when all was said and done, the Associated General Contractors of Kansas gave the project a standing ovation, giving the Award of Excellence.

The award, now in its 23rd year, is awarded to state buildings, said Cleo Daugherty of Buckley Roofing.
