Register for Prairie Fire Races by Aug. 31 for Lowest Fees

Friends University’s Run with Friends group is encouraging alumni, students, board of trustees members, faculty, staff and others affiliated with the University to participate in one of the Prairie Fire Marathon races Oct. 14.

The races will include a marathon, half marathon, Mayor’s 5K Challenge, Fun Run and Walk, and Youth Marathon. Register with Prairie Fire by Aug. 31 to take advantage of the lowest registration fee.  A Fit for Life Expo will also take place Saturday before the race, and volunteers are needed to staff the Friends University booth at the Expo.

Colvin Elementary School Enrichment Day at Friends

Colvin Elementary School students will learn the importance of a college education from more than 300 Friends University freshmen and transfer students.

As part of the Week of Welcome Service Day Aug. 20, incoming Friends University students will have the opportunity to encourage and teach about 150 third-graders about the value of higher education.

“We’re really excited to bring this event to campus again this year,” said Brett McLaughlin, coordinator of residence life at Friends University. “Last year’s event was a huge success, and this year promises to be even better.”

Google Brings Street View Trike Technology to Friends University Campus

The world will soon get a closer, more detailed view of Friends University thanks to some of the latest technology from Google. 

Google Street View and the Street View Trike visited Wichita July 30 to shoot images of streets and pedestrian pathways throughout the University’s campus. The Trike is a three-wheel pedi-cab with a camera system on top that explores and captures some of the world’s most interesting places that aren’t accessible by cars, including universities, zoos, theme parks and more.

Topeka Education Center Hosts Blood Drive

Friends University students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community will be helping fill the shortage in the Red Cross' blood supply during its blood drive Aug. 27. Donors can sign up to donate between 11:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., and the donation process usually takes about 15 minutes. Summer Projects Add Campus Cafe and Renovate Gym Floor

Summer-time renovations are bringing a new café to the Casado Campus Center and new gym floor graphics to the Garvey Physical Education Center. 

Casado Campus Center
Friends University’s Casado Campus Center is receiving a face-lift this summer with renovations in the lower level.

The $350,000 project replaces Freddie’s Snack Bar with Jazzman’s Café and Bakery, and Sandella’s Flatbread Sandwiches.

Dr. Maccarone's Egret Research Featured in Eagle

Friends University biology professor Dr. Alan Maccarone is one of the nation's leading experts on egrets, and has spent most of his summers since 1990 studying the movements of the snowy white birds in Wichita. Friends University has funded research projects for three years.

Rockcleft Camp Affected by Waldo Canyon Fire

UPDATE: July 2, 2012 – As of July 2, Rockcleft is open for business and non-residents are now allowed back in the area.


As of Wednesday, June 27, the wildfires in the Colorado Springs area are approximately one mile from Friends University's Rockcleft Camp. While the camp is still intact, the area has been evacuated and is closed until further notice.

Pendleton and Jaradat Receive Faculty Awards

Young Award for Excellence in Teaching; and Bassam Jaradat, adjunct faculty in the Department of Business, Technology and Leadership, was awarded the Jan LaFever Award for Adjunct Teaching.

Psychology Student Presents Winning Paper at Convention

Friends University senior Jeremy Lyne earned top honors at the Great Plains Students’ Psychology Convention March 9-10 at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. 

Lyne, a psychology major and religion minor, presented his senior research paper, “Playing with Emotions: Is There a Correlation Between Depression and Video Game Usage?” and won first place in the category of undergraduate social psychology – empirical.

Wichita’s foremost expert on the Civil Rights Movement in Wichita will be featured on CSPAN2 Book TV  June 2-3.

“The network will feature Wichita historians/authors, including me,” said Dr. Gretchen Eick, professor of history at Friends University. “I am interviewed about my book, ‘Dissent in Wichita,’ which begins with the first successful student-led sit-in in the United States here in Wichita in the summer of 1958.”
